Orixine Joins National Collaboration for Health Security Protocols at ONSA Meeting
On November 5th and 6th, 2024, Orixine’s technical officers took part in a pivotal two-day meeting organised by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) to develop a joint national protocol for public health emergencies. Held at ONSA’s complex, the meeting gathered representatives from public health ministries, government departments, security agencies, and partner organisations to address the country’s need for cohesive, rapid, and organised responses to health crises.
The gathering followed May 2024’s successful Tabletop Simulation Exercise (SIMEX), where several key gaps in Nigeria’s public health emergency response frameworks were identified. In response, this meeting aimed to set the groundwork for a unified legal instrument, streamlining roles and responsibilities across sectors during public health events.
Objectives included a thorough review of existing legal documents, policies, and protocols from public health and security agencies, focusing on areas such as surveillance, investigation, and crisis response. The meeting highlighted critical challenges, such as fragmented communication systems and inconsistent emergency planning practices. Many agencies lack interoperable systems, with each sector – animal, environmental, and human health – using distinct reporting mechanisms. Orixine’s technical officers, alongside other experts, contributed insights on bridging these gaps and fostering integrated surveillance.
Key findings underscored the need to standardise risk assessment practices and reduce bureaucratic barriers to ensure timely information exchange. The underuse of cross-sectoral systems, like the One Health Risk Surveillance platform, further emphasised the need for improved collaboration.
The outcomes of the event will support the development of a unified protocol that enhances public health and security coordination, ultimately strengthening Nigeria’s readiness and resilience against public health emergencies. Orixine’s engagement reflects its commitment to fostering effective health governance and supporting national efforts to protect public health.
